De-Escalation Techniques and Strategies

Institute on Aging welcomes you to a free, 2-hour training at 3575 Geary Blvd., San Francisco, CA 94118. Continuing Education credit will be offered, and the presenter will be IOA’s own Jenny Yen, PsyD.
During this training, participants will learn how to recognize, diffuse, redirect and manage client behavior which has potential towards damage or harm towards self or others.
This workshop will be appropriate for all those in aging services, including: psychologists; family therapists; social workers; case managers; nurses; elder-law practitioners; fiduciaries; long-term care administrators; gerontologists, human resources professionals and family/professional caregivers.
INSTRUCTOR: Jenny Yen, Psy.D., Training Director / Supervising Psychologist, for IOA’s Integrated Behavioral Health program.
Dr. Yen graduated from UC Davis with a Bachelor’s degree in clinical psychology, then attended William James College in Boston, MA for her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, with a concentration in Geropsychology. She completed a Geropsychology postdoctoral fellowship at the VA Palo Alto, taking a one-year training in neuropsychological testing and capacity evaluations. Currently, she spends most of her time at IOA San Mateo, consulting and supporting RCFE and IOA staff in addressing challenging client behaviors which are due to dementia and psychiatric issues. She also works as a consultant at the Elder Abuse Forensic Center and conducts capacity evaluations for Adult Protective Services.
By the end of this program, attendees will be able to:
– Define escalation and de-escalation
-Identify at least 2 signs of escalation
-Identify at least 2 factors that may contribute to a client escalating
-Identify at least two de-escalation techniques
Date: Friday, November 1, 2019, 10 a.m.-12 p.m. Doors to the training will open at 9:15 a.m. The program will begin on time, so please be prompt.
Place: Institute on Aging, 3575 Geary Blvd., San Francisco, CA 94118
Directions and Parking: Limited street parking around the building, in mostly 2-hour increments. Public transportation is nearby, with the Geary bus running right in front of the building.
Cost: No charge, but RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED.

Intermediate Level: Some basic knowledge of the specific content area is required, but you need not have in-depth knowledge or skills. The activity will provide information at a level beyond the basic knowledge of the topic.
All Continuing Education certificates will be delivered digitally, within 5 days of the event. An evaluation-test will be provided to all CE registrants, who must then attend the entire program and turn in their evaluation at the end of the program in order to qualify for a CE certificate.
American Psychological Association (APA): Institute on Aging is approved by the American Psychological Association to sponsor continuing education for psychologists. Institute on Aging maintains responsibility for this program and its content.
