As the saying goes, “growing old is not for sissies.” In an era when people are living well into their 80s and 90s, most of us will spend more years in elderhood than in childhood, yet we consider old age to be a disease—a condition to be dreaded and disparaged. Helping to turn that tide are two authors who are considered giants in the field of redefining aging. Geriatrician Louise Aronson, MD, argues in her book, “Elderhood,” that our “third act” can be our most brilliant. And Chip Conley, a lauded leader in the business world and Strategic Advisor of Airbnb, posits in “Wisdom at Work: The Making of a Modern Elder,” that experience in the workplace is making a comeback, and that companies are finally waking up to the value of the humility, emotional intelligence, and wisdom that comes with age. Come hear these two pioneers converse about ways to shatter notions and expectations around aging.
