Using Harm Reduction with Older Adults and Adults with Disabilities
May 29 @ 10:00 am - 12:00 pmFree
Institute on Aging welcomes you to a 2-hour, online training, presented by Cynthia Hoffman, MFT, of San Francisco Harm Reduction.
This is a program of the IOA Clinical Collaborative Expansion of Services, and funded by the San Francisco Department of Aging and Adult Services. However, all are welcome to attend.
This online workshop will review the concepts of Harm Reduction and Motivational Interviewing,as they pertain to working with older adults and adults with disabilities. We will talk about the use of client- centered language, assessing for substance use as well as countertransference concerns that arise when working with this specific population. We will explore how professionals can help clients increase their harm reduction practices while clients use substances. And we will consider the impact of COVID-19 on both the lives of our clients and our work with them.
The training will be appropriate for all those in aging services, including: psychologists; family therapists; social workers; case managers; nurses; elder-law practitioners; fiduciaries; long-term care administrators; gerontologists, human resources professionals and family/professional caregivers.
After this training, participants will be able to:
– Implement 3 assessment skills (stages of change, drug set setting and decisional balance)
– Practice the use of explorative non-judgmental, client centered and accepting perspectives using participant role play (will utilize Zoom break out groups) and lecture
– Through the use of bias exploration, identify 3 countertransference issues often encountered
when working with people who use substances. (PWUS)
