Alameda County Programs

Friendly Visitor Program

Weekly visits help seniors in Alameda combat isolation

The Friendly Visitor Program provides companionship to homebound seniors in Alameda County. Through weekly visits with volunteers, program participants share stories, chat about mutual interests, or even share a cup of tea over conversation! The Friendly Visitor Program helps reduce social isolation and loneliness, improves mental and physical health, and fosters intergenerational connection and understanding.

These rich and rewarding relationships create an opportunity for stories to be heard and friendships to be made.

Eligibility

  • Seniors who have clearly expressed, of their own volition, the wish to build a connection with a visitor.
  • Seniors who have the ability to converse and remember a volunteer from visit to visit.
  • Seniors in Alameda County who live in isolation and/or with loneliness

Volunteers

  • Adults who can visit at least once a week, minimum four hours a month total

To learn more or to sign up to volunteer, fill out the form below, or contact IOA at 415.750.4111 / connect@ioaging.org and reference the Friendly Visitor Program.

Participants are expected to participate weekly, for the duration of the program. Appointments are 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. or 1 p.m. – 2 p.m.

Eligibility

  • Alameda County residents, 60 years and older, living in the community (rent or own).
  • Participants must be able to answer questions about their mobility and fall history, as well as follow directions related to a balance assessment.
