Personalized Dementia Care for Aging Adults and Their Families

Caring for a loved one with dementia can feel like uncharted territory. Each day brings new questions, emotional challenges, and decisions. At Institute on Aging, we created Compania™ (Come-PAN-yuh) to be your “companion” as you navigate dementia care for your loved one in the San Francisco Bay Area — with expert support and compassion.

What Is Compania?

Compania by Institute on Aging (IOA) is your comprehensive dementia care program tailored for older adults and their caregivers. It combines in-home care, structured daily enrichment programs, caregiver coaching, and ongoing care management – all led by dementia-trained professionals who understand the unique needs of memory care. Whether your loved one is experiencing early memory loss or requires more advanced care, Compania offers personalized dementia care services designed to enhance quality of life – for them and for you.

Compania is designed to support a person’s whole self—encouraging movement, mental engagement, emotional comfort, and social connection. Compania members may experience:

  • A brighter mood and more stable behavior
  • Less agitation and confusion
  • Better sleep and more consistent daily rhythms
  • Greater mobility and interaction with others
  • Fewer feelings of loneliness and isolation

It’s care that nurtures not just your needs, but your overall well-being.

Dementia Care Services Offered Through Compania

Located in the beautiful Presidio, our dementia-specific enrichment program offers daily cognitive engagement and social connection in a structured, supervised setting. It also gives caregivers time to rest or attend to other responsibilities. The Presidio location serves clients from San Francisco and Marin.

Program highlights include:

  • Group exercise and memory stimulation
Gentle movement and brain games help reduce anxiety, boost mood, and maintain cognitive function. Exercises are dementia-informed and designed to be engaging and accessible.
  • Extraordinary experiences from creative arts to outdoor excursions
Music, art, and nature outings spark joy, self-expression, and connection – especially for those with limited verbal skills. These experiences create meaningful moments that build confidence and trust. Members enjoy the beauty of the Presidio during outdoor adventures, including group walks, rides in our 8-passenger electric vehicle, or on our piloted “trishaw” bicycle. Whether creating art or exploring the outdoors, each experience is thoughtfully designed to be memorable, meaningful, and uplifting.
  • Nutritious meals and personalized support
Meals are tailored to individual needs, with caring staff providing one-on-one support to encourage healthy eating in a relaxed, respectful setting.
  • Door-to-door transportation
Safe, reliable rides ensure consistent participation and reduce stress for families. Drivers are trained to assist individuals with cognitive challenges.
  • Caregiver education and respite support
Families receive guidance, training, and a break from caregiving duties – helping them feel more confident, supported, and less alone.

Our caregivers are certified and trained in dementia care best practices, offering respectful and personalized in-home dementia care for Bay Area families.

  • Feel comfortable, and confident with help bathing, dressing, and grooming
  • Enjoy healthy meals with support for planning, cooking, and nutrition
  • Stay on track with medication and move safely around your home
  • Feel less alone with meaningful companionship and engagement
  • Live in a tidy, safer home with light housekeeping and safety checks
  • Find comfort with caregivers who are matched with you based on shared language and culture
  • Care is available hourly, overnight, or 24/7 – depending on your family’s needs.

Caring for someone with dementia can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to navigate it alone. Our Caregiver Coaching service provides dedicated, one-on-one support for family caregivers managing the emotional, logistical, and behavioral complexities of dementia care.

Coaching includes:

  • Personalized guidance from dementia care professionals
  • Strategies for managing challenging behaviors and building routines
  • Emotional support and encouragement for caregivers
  • Help setting goals and making care decisions with confidence
  • Ongoing check-ins to support long-term resilience and reduce burnout
  • Alzheimer’s caregiver support across San Francisco and beyond

In 2025, 100% of Caregiver Coaching participants said they would recommend the program to a friend or family member, according to IOA’s annual satisfaction survey.

Whether you’re just starting the journey or deep in the day-to-day challenges, our Caregiver Coaches help you feel more equipped, confident, and supported.

Note: Caregiver Coaching is available virtually anywhere in the United States and internationally

Why Choose Compania for Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care?

Expert People, Compassionate Approach

Our dementia-trained caregivers and care teams understand the progression of memory loss and are dedicated to preserving dignity, reducing anxiety, and building trust – every step of the way. Families praise our staff for their kindness, professionalism, and ability to create calm, personalized routines. Institute on Aging’s Enrichment Center staff receives high praise on review sites, including Google, where we are rated 5 stars.

As the caregiver for my husband, it warms my heart and eases my mind to know unequivocally that he's being mentally stimulated, cared for, and is safe. It's as though the Enrichment Center staff is an extension of our family. They are at all times anticipating the needs of my loved one, as well as mine.

Before we enrolled my dad in Compania, my family and I were just trying to get through the day. Now we have space to breathe and can enjoy the little moments with each other like we used to.

Innovative, Flexible, and Integrated

As a program of the non-profit Institute on Aging, Compania exists to serve – not profit from – families facing memory loss. That means every recommendation we make is based on your loved one’s unique needs, not financial incentives. We support the whole caregiving journey with education, respite care, and emotional guidance so no one feels alone.

Innovation

Every care plan is customized, blending evidence-based techniques with your loved one’s habits, history, and personality. Special attention is given to Compania members’ needs as they continue to evolve, and our dementia-trained experts work with you to identify supplemental services and community programs – including support groups – to make the whole family’s journey with Alzheimer’s more manageable.

Caring for a loved one with dementia, Alzheimer’s, and other similar health issues is extremely taxing and isolating. Institute on Aging offers programs and a team of caring and knowledgeable team members who can help you and your loved one through this very difficult journey.

Part of IOA’s Integrated Care Network

As a signature program of Institute on Aging, Companioa gives you more than just dementia care – you gain access to IOA’s broader services like care management, caregiver support, the On Lok PACE program, and the Friendship Line, so your care plan can grow with your family’s needs.
