The CalFresh Expansion: Changes to SSI Policy
June 4, 2019 @ 3:00 am - 4:30 am
Institute on Aging welcomes San Francisco-Marin Food Bank to conduct a training for our case managers: The CalFresh Expansion: Changes to SSI Policy.
This training is very timely: On June 1, 2019, disabled Californians and seniors who count on SSI/SSP will be able to apply for the CalFresh food assistance program for the first time. Californians receiving SSI have been ineligible for CalFresh because of the now reversed cash-out.
This reversal of the cash-out will now make it possible to offer a reliable source of affordable nutrition to older Californians and people with disabilities, benefitting thousands throughout the state. There will also be built-in protections for newly-eligible CalFresh participants currently residing within CalFresh households.
There are approximately 41,000 SSI recipients in San Francisco, all of whom are very low-income seniors or individuals with disabilities. Therefore, this is going to be a massive community effort, and San Francisco-Marin Food Bank wants to ensure that community partners like IOA are fully supported.
During this 1.5-hour training on June 4th, the focus will be on prescreening clients for eligibility and preparing them for the process. In addition to guiding hands-on practice in submitting applications, San Francisco-Marin Food Bank seeks input from the class attendees, regarding how best to offer CalFresh enrollment support to as many IOA clients as possible.
