Managing Anxiety in Dementia: A Caregiver’s Guide

Anxiety is a common and challenging symptom for individuals living with dementia. It can appear suddenly, be triggered by changes in the environment, or stem from confusion about time, place, or routine. For caregivers, seeing a loved one in distress can be overwhelming, especially when they’re unsure how to respond.

In this short Caregiver Coaching Tip video with Alexandra Kaplan, you’ll learn three simple but powerful strategies to help manage anxiety in a loved one with dementia. Below, we break down each tip to guide you in putting them into practice.

1. Reassure with Compassion

When a loved one with dementia feels anxious, reassurance goes a long way. A gentle tone of voice, calm body language, and simple statements like “You’re safe, I’m here with you” can help ease their fears. Physical comfort, such as holding a hand or giving a light hug (if welcomed), can also create a sense of security.

2. Validate Their Feelings

Even if their worry seems illogical or inaccurate, it’s important to validate the emotion behind it. Dismissing their concerns can increase distress. Instead, try saying, “I can see you’re worried about that. It must feel unsettling.” This acknowledgment can help them feel heard and understood.

3. Redirect Their Attention

Lingering too long in a state of anxiety can heighten agitation. Once you’ve reassured and validated their feelings, gently shift their focus. Redirect their attention to something soothing or engaging, such as listening to favorite music, doing a simple activity together, or stepping outside for fresh air.

Putting These Tips Into Practice

Caregiving often requires patience and creativity. These three steps—reassure, validate, redirect—are not about dismissing feelings, but about helping your loved one feel safe while moving them toward a calmer state of mind.
